From Hungary–With an A

What happens when our need to find the best of the best talent out there, our desire to shout out to the social media crowds that we exist, and our determination to keep our community strong require reinforcements? The communications team gets a new member.

Rebeka Mércz arrives from Hungary, leaving her love, friends, and family behind to embark on a new adventure with us at Dephion. “As a Hungarian, I frequently get questions like ‘What country is that?’ or, in the worst case, ‘You mean, HUNGRY?’”

For those who don’t know, this is where Hungary is.

For those who don’t know, this is where Hungary is.

“As a result, living abroad as a Hungarian has always given me the feeling that I need to prove myself even more.”

As a young girl, Rebeka dreamed of traveling the world as a stewardess. Seeing new sights, and exploring new places seemed like the perfect way to spend the rest of her life. Then, height requirements for the job stomped out that possibility… for the better. “It later turned out that I am deathly afraid of flying,” which makes her even braver for choosing a job in The Netherlands, more than 1,400 km away from home.

Still, as fate would have it, every path she has taken, originally inspired by that spirit of exploration, would lead her to us eventually. “I chose [to study] tourism and leisure management because I've always considered hospitality to be the ‘happiness industry’, and I wanted to make people happy with what I do on a daily basis However, after completing an online marketing internship, the world of marketing completely stole my heart, and I knew that after my studies, I needed to go in that direction instead.”

Lucky us!

Moving to a whole new place to advance her career was a bold step for Rebeka, who had never lived so far away from home. Never mind that Molly, Margit, and Lali would have to endure without their beloved human, there was also… the paperwork. “I'd be lying if I said it was simple. Apart from all of the governmental and administrative tasks that had to be completed (which took a long time and were a pain in the ass), the first few weeks were extremely difficult.”

At least our new colleague wasn’t left completely to her own devices once the plane touched down. “Some of my colleagues, who I am happy to already also call my friends, even surprised me with a nice dinner and surprise package when I moved into my new apartment. Their presence helped me a lot when I was feeling a bit homesick and lonely at the beginning of this new adventure.

“I consider myself extremely lucky to have had the support of my colleagues, particularly Balou de Joode, Christina Deserno, Kim Brassé, Loes Vandewal, and Jeroen Schouten, and I honestly believe that I would not have gotten this far without them.”

Also, the new workplace wasn’t that bad. “I like having a lot of freedom and autonomy, and I can let my creativity fly every day. I also consider myself extremely fortunate because of the team I am a part of; working together has been a pleasure from the start.”

When Rebeka isn’t working, you may find her taking long walks (not necessarily on the beach, but preferably surrounded by nature), practicing yoga, or taking an online course. “I am also very interested in psychology and enjoy reading about its various aspects. And just for fun, I tutor small children (Hungarians) in English.”

Rebeka’s adventures at Dephion have just begun, but from where we stand, her future looks bright and promising. “I'm always looking for new ways to push myself and my boundaries. I have a long list of things I'd like to work on in the near future. These include learning new professional skills as well as personal development.”

The communications team not only found a member with exactly the kind of experience and skills they had sought but also an amazing human being with a kind heart who has become a true friend. Welcome to Dephion, Rebeka.
